I am sure that "the powers to be" are asking this question of themselves. If they aren't they need to. There have been some interesting stories the past couple of years that have "saved the day" for the moment such as the Kenny Perry run in his late 40's and the short emergence of Camillo and Anthony as winners but these are all stories that come and quickly go. The real "story" of the tour is Tiger and everything lives and breathes around "that story".
Tiger is so dominant that the tour lives and breathes by the tournaments that he enters. I don't have the statistics, but I would bet that attendance, television audience and ultimately revenues greatly vary depending upon whether he is present.
And what is amazing with Tiger Woods is that virtually every tournament he enters he delivers. Look at the past two years and the number of victories and top ten finishes. Tiger is in the hunt virtually every tournament he enters. And that has been going on ever since he showed up on the scene.
Look what is happening to the LPGA. They had Annika who also dominated and brought the LPGA out of the darkness and we thought Lorena was about to emerge but now she is just another golfer in the pack.
Golf needs another Tiger. It needs that Nicklaus, Palmer, Player rivalry with a Miller, Watson, and Casper thrown in and I just don't see it.
