Most proshops can provide you with the pin placements on the holes before each round if you ask according to a couple of local professionals. And, to be honest, they can even advise you of where of where you want to position your ball to approach each green. Now most golfers never ask those sort of questions. Some because they don't know to and maybe even some because they don't see the need since they don't have that sort of control over what is going to happen. But that is not the way to think. Just as much as golf is feel and confidence, it is also attitude. So by being more aware of what you need to do and starting to think more strategically over time it will become a part of what you do and just maybe your game to rise to a different level along the way. Most good golfers don't pay attention to the ball at address but the target they are aiming at. Not only does that keep their focus on where they want the ball to land, but it also results in them swinging through the ball and at the target and not at the ball. The same is true in putting. You are much better off picking a target between the ball and the hole to aim toward and focus on as opposed to focusing on the ball. The stroke is more fluid and you find that distance improves.
So next time, ask about pin positions and approach angle the next time you play. Good habits breed better golf!
